Euan Uglow

During WW2 Euan Uglow and his brother John, were evacuated to the rural county of Cornwall he spent his time on a farm and on construction sites, this change from the busy city of London majorly impacted his work. As Uglow was a builder the influence of architecture and the involvement of mathematics influenced his  In the years following the end of WW2, Euan Uglow studied and was taught by artist William Coldstream,

Euan Uglow was a major realist artist who has impacted modern artists. In Euan's are there are faint meausrement marks in the work, Uglow intertwined measurement and intergrtate into his work in order to create a true link between the art work at reality. He applied the Golden Section and other mathematical systems in order to create real proportions. When using models in his painting he would draw around the individual, as the painting would take up to months, to ensure accuracy. He used these methods in order for his works to create a "sculptural" affect.

For the experimentation aspect of this unit we started out with drawing a representation of our hand. We were given 10 minutes for this first observation. Once this was done we had to repeat this hand drawing but using a different technique. This technique required to draw a symmetrical cross on a plastic sheet and then place the plastic sheet over our hand, we then needed to trace the outline of our hand in order to get the proportions as correct as possible. After we completed this we need to trace a cross again on the canvas we wanted to draw on, I then copied the outline from the plastic sheet onto the canvas and then continued to draw the details of my hand.

I also tried this method with my face, but instead of tracing the outline on a plastic sheet I instead traced the outline of my face onto a mirror. I then transferred this outline onto my canvas.

These methods share similarities with Uglow's style of work as both of our works use measurement and the ideal of correct proportions. Although Uglow's work is described as realistic an piece of art is incapable of truly being real as it is only a symbol or a representation of reality. In a sense his art is truly abstract as the representation in the work can be deceived as non existent as it is not the true portrayal of the reality. Personally I did not like the methods as I found it quite difficult to complete and I prefer to draw just from the naked eye.

Caravaggio

The Fortune Teller, Caravaggio, 1595

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, famously known as Caravaggio, he was born on the 28th of September 1571 in Milan, Italy. He's known as one of the most problematic and scandelous artisits of the 16th century due to his criminal offences; murder, public weaponry offence, gambiling as well as his reputation for starting physical fights and arguments.

This work has presumed to be painted with Oil Paint on a 1594 by 150 cm canvas. We have needed to gather knowledge on this artist as once we have gathered a full understanding of his work I will then create a piece inspired from Caravaggio. There are in fact 2 versions of this work, one created in 1594 and then replicated a year later in 1595.

The work showcases a budding boy having his palm read by a young gypsy. This is the intial 'story' shown to the audience, due to closer inspection it can be seen that as the gypsy is 'reading' the boys hand she is infact removing his rings while the boy stays oblivious and distracted by the gypsy's beauty The art work is a great demonstration of manipulation due to the showcase of a deeply contextual story.

The representation of a 'innocent' young lady manipulating a young man by using her looks truly changes the perspective of the audience. The work provides a sense of reality due to the use of tone and the organic shapes, in the 16th century this type of work was dictated as 'modern' as the work was not based from religious text or prophecies but is instead a scene based from a real life situation.

Caravaggio is well known for placing the focal points in an empty background, this allows the audience to focus in on the people in order to gather the context of the work. The colours used in the work creates a feeling of tranquility due to the neutral earthy tones used. The soft light captured in the work also creates the feeling of serenity due to the delicate and blended texture and visual it provides. The space occupied by the focal points provide a example of symmetry as both individuals take up roughly the same amount of space.

The work inflicts a personal memory, while i was travelling around Italy there were multiple gypsy women who would lure people in by consisting they would be able to tell them their future, but instead of promising this they would trick them and steal tourists valuables.

Work of this genre were popular among  Northern Europe, the genre was starting to spread to the rest of Europe, Caraviggo was an apprentice in the Northern area of Italy where he most likely learnt about the art type.
